What a fun word. Legerdemain. It just doesn't get the attention it deserves, really. Like many other words. Unlike [livejournal.com profile] ljdq, of course. Which gets quite a bit of attention, but could always stand to use more. So if you've been lax in your quizzing duties this week, now's the time to step up to the plate and use your sleight of mind skills (or in some cases, your very slight mind skills) to take on the challenge of this week's quizly goodness. You won't regret it, I'm certain. Tell your friends to play too. Pimp it out like it's never been pimped before. We don't have any merchandising ("where the real money is made!"), so cut loose with the word of mouth and watch our numbers grow!

Also, we have good eatin' here.
Def Leppard? More like Roast Leopard!

Now get out there and play like you mean it!

*rolling eyes and chuckling at the joke

Gawd, I really feel old...took me forever (and two follow-ups) to catch the flamethrower reference. I would have caught it sooner when I was 29. My mind was quicker then. Really. Swear to God.

'Young Frankenstein' being the most quotable, of course, followed by 'Blazing Saddles'. Nonetheless, I am hanging my head in shame.

We should make one of these, & then I'll raffle it off as a fundraiser for my triathlon!

GENIUS.

So if you've been lax in your quizzing duties this week

Or... this MONTH. *pause* Last COUPLE of months... D:

I'm a bad quizling. Wicked, bad, naughty quizling. I must have... a spanking. "A spanking, a spanking!" YES. And after the spanking... *stops* Wait, kids might be watching.

Nevermind.

Just have to say, the alt-text on the dinner picture made me giggle. *is on a classic-rock kick lately*

The alt-text is usually quite amusing, as this *is* LJDQ and is therefore teh funneh. And my iPod has been sticking "Pour Some Sugar On Me" into the supposedly random playlist quite often lately. *hums*

The alt-text as tooltip popup only works with IE.
Any other browser, nothing shows.
To make it work with all browsers, you need the text in alt= AND title=

I did not know that. Thanks!

It's one of the infamous IE ignoring standards thing.
Strictly speaking, alt text is only supposed to be displayed if the image is not, while title is a description of the image itself.
The easiest solution is just to use both :)

I'm done with the quiz, so, anyone up for some cribbage? I got the board and cards.

Ooooh, I love cribbage! Finding people who know how to play is difficult. ....so's remembering all those little rules when you haven't played for a long time, due to the difficulty of finding people who know how to play it....

My dad taught me when I was in third grade (when dinosaurs ruled the earth), and I taught the game to more people than I can remember when I was in college.

I've only administered two double-skunks in my entire life (one was to an ex, which makes it even more satisfying now), and only been DS'ed once. I've also have gotten only one 28 hand in my life, and never a 29. You?

From: [identity profile] ihateusernames.livejournal.com
I think I learned from a computer program that had all sorts of card games on it, and then I bought a cribbage board once on vacation so I could play sans-computer.

I had to look up what a double-skunk was! I don't think I've double-skunked someone, but I'm pretty sure I've skunked someone at least once. But I don't recall what my best score was. I want to say it was something in the lower twenties, or perhaps a 25. I definitely don't think I've gotten up to 28 or 29.

From: [identity profile] thepikey.livejournal.com
I learned when I was ten by watching my dad and brother play and figuring out the rules just by observation, no instruction involved.

I got a 28 once. After that, my older brother wouldn't play against me anymore... he sure would side with me for teams, though. (hey, when you're a senior and your grade school brother mops the floor with you, it's ego-check time)

Several double skunks have been dished out.

The heyday for my playing was in boy scouts. I remember one year at summercamp playing the scoutmasters from all the troops there and soundly kicking their butts. I only lost one game the whole week.

I've had people refuse to play me, too, after they'd being skunked more times than I could count.

My highlight was in a team game in college. On pegging points, both our opponents were on 'go' on 27. Partner lays ace down for 28. I lay down another ace for 29 and a pair. Partner plays ace #3 for 30 and pairs royal. My last card was the case ace for 31 and double pairs royal. Sweet. To paraphrase The A-Team, I love it when a hand comes together.

English/cribbage dictionaries will be on sale in the lobby for the non-cribbers. ;)

The same week as the 28 hand I had a 24 pt hand and a 24 pt crib to accompany it. That one alone was pushing him toward the edge, the 28 sent him over.

Day-ummm...hands from the gods. How'd you score the 24 crib--quad run with 5s, or with 7-8s? Regardless, I am in awe.

Personally, I love feeding myself 5s and 7-8s when I have the crib, then seeing the look of shock from my opponent as I peg a quarter-lap.

It's been a quarter-century-ish, damned if I can recall. Methinks the cut may have been a six though, so could be one of each. *shrug*

In lo these many years of cutting for deal and pegging and skunking, I've only found two people who can beat me more often than not.

My parents.

From: [identity profile] i-calql8.livejournal.com
Ain't that the way? On the other hand, the two people who can consistently beat us at crib don't mean a hill of beans against the legions of fallen opponents we've vanquished over the years, huh?

And do you play muggins or no muggins?

Date: 2006-07-06 08:43 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] thepikey.livejournal.com
If you're playing muggins, that means either you or your opponent is incapable of counting correctly. Such players are beneath contempt.

Date: 2006-07-06 09:40 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] i-calql8.livejournal.com
Wow, hardcore. But couldn't you also say that *not* playing muggins shows one's lack of faith in their own ability to count, and a fear of one's opponent pouncing on their unclaimed points? Just sayin'.

Personally, I prefer non with new players and friendly games, and muggins for team play, grudge matches, and when playing for money.

If my opponent can't count right, I should be thrashing them without the added benefit of taking their points. *Me* not counting right Doesn't Happen.

Date: 2006-07-07 04:03 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] i-calql8.livejournal.com
Oh, full concur...*I* don't miss points--it just does not happen--but players who do should be thrashed further for missing them. Life's rough, buy a helmet.

Players I hold 'beneath contempt' are those who count their hands...so...slowly...just show me your cards, gimme the total, and I'll figure it out by the time the cards are picked up. Let's get to the next hand.

Pah. *waves dismissively* They do not deserve to feel my lash. My silent contempt is far more withering, though they know it not. For taking points in such a fashion constitutes teaching them a lesson, and they do not deserve instruction from a teacher of my caliber.
