"I have no clue as to most of the answers, but I'm newly 21 and inebriated, so I should give it a shot." - [livejournal.com profile] lafourchette

No, you should give YOURSELF a shot. Carry on.

1. What poet is the originator of the phrase "Theirs not to reason why,/Theirs but to do and die"?

"the only name that comes to mind right now is Richard Dean Anderson, and I don't think that's right, somehow." - [livejournal.com profile] unithien_rerith

(Right rhythm, wrong name. -CV)

"Oh, god, I dislike poetry. Except for haiku, because they are mercifully short." - [livejournal.com profile] sashayaki

(Theirs not to reason
Why; Theirs but to do and die.
By Al Tennyson. -CV)

"I am increasingly shocked at the lack of knowledge I have of literature. But then I remembered that the only poems I've read are the few forced on me by the British Education system. Me and the world have functioned pretty fine with this arrangement thus far so I think I'll go with what works." - [personal profile] selenityshiroi

"I don't know, but I'd hate to work for him." - [livejournal.com profile] elbiesee

"I don't know, but me thinks he started the whole 'woe is me, my inner-darkness knows no bounds' movement." - [personal profile] b_hulsmans

(Whoa, that's a lot to pin on one guy. -AL)

"Awww, man! See, if you had used this for the lyrics question instead of the poem question, then I would know the answer to the lyrics question, since that's almost the line from the KMFDM song 'Legions of Me'. But noooooo, you have to go and make this one the poem question, leaving me once again flailing in a mire of the unknown. Thanks a lot." - [profile] nakedblueninja

(You're welcome. We aim to displease. -AL)

"I think they carried a positive charge at the time, making them anodes." - [livejournal.com profile] blindgeoff

"Ever since my mother pointed out that 'Charge of the Light Brigade' follows the same meter as 'The Night Before Christmas,' I can't stop myself from going 'Dash away, dash away rode the 600.' It makes the Crimean War lose some of its gravitas." - [personal profile] illogicalvulcan

"A computer game version of Risk I once played would allow to set 'do or die' as the attack setting for a given province, which meant that it would automatically keep rolling until the province was taken or you ran out of army to throw at it. For each failed roll, it would recite that very couplet of 'Light Brigade' before stubbornly trying again. Thus my forces were crushed trying to punch through Siam, but I learned poetry in the process, so it's all good." - [profile] cmzero

(We are very familiar with that version. Oh, the good old days... -AL&CV)

"Alfred, Lord Tennyson. I've always wanted to have a title that would allow me to use a comma in my name. Sadly, I don't think writing smut is likely to get me ennobled." - [personal profile] deza

"Ahh, Tennyson...taking poetic license to historical events since 1809. Everyone knows that you only need 300 men for an heroic last stand!" - [livejournal.com profile] wint3rhart

(This is Britain, not Sparta. -CV)

"Why can't I be Loz, Lady Enger8, huh?" - [profile] lozenger8

"A1fr3d, L337 10y50n" - [personal profile] faeriedragon

"Hey, when did they start making a rank of card called 'Tennyson'?" - [profile] unwritten_dirge
"Oh wait. I just got it! Ten-nyson. I see what you did there." - [livejournal.com profile] morganashkevron

Number of Quizlings who knew the answer because of the movie Clue: 19.

Correct Answer: Alfred Lord Tennyson

"..and why does she always get the seat next to me on the airplane?" - [livejournal.com profile] i_calql8

"DI Jack Spratt, Nursery Crime Division. " - [livejournal.com profile] scifantasy, [livejournal.com profile] falar, others

"His wife has the right idea; I'm allergic to healthy food too." - [livejournal.com profile] maisontv

"Another answer from the dusty recesses of my life, I disliked this rhyme intensely because fat is disgusting, and the woman was only allowed to eat the fat, 'course I didn't realise as a child that she actually wanted to eat the fat. Anyway, it was Jack Spratt and his wife, who never really had a name, which I thought was a bit mean too. " - [livejournal.com profile] distractogirl

"Jack Spratt. Clearly they were gamers and/or SCAdians. And possibly into S&M, but that's probably a mental image better left unpainted... " - [livejournal.com profile] marasca

"That would be Jack Sprat? Spat? One of those something-gooey-hitting-the-floor-sounding words. " - [livejournal.com profile] wint3rheart

"Have you noticed that everyone in nursery rhymes is named Jack? Jack & Jill, Jack Sprat, little Jack Horner... I don't know who Jack was, but he must have been servicing all the wholesome poets in England. " - [livejournal.com profile] kestrel127

Because it's too easy for it to be mispronounced "BAAS." It's the same reason Led Zeppelin was spelled the way IT was: the band members didn't want people calling the band "LEED Zeppelin."
