LJ Daily Quiz: 24+1 October 2011
Oct. 25th, 2011 10:10 amYeah, timing, not one of our strong points lately. Long vacation weekend does that sometimes.
1. The town of Gastown became Granville, and then Granville became which city?
"Constantinople" -
"Istanbul" -
"The City of TOWNSVILLE" -
"Bartertown" -
(The population keeps halving for some reason. -CV)
"Farmville" -
"Orgrimmar, Exodar, or Darnassus?" -
(+1, last week's quiz. And really, who wouldn't want to take their epic gear and beat the crap out of all of Vancouver? -CV)
"PARADISE CITY! WHERE THE GRASS IS GREEN AND SOMETHING SOMETHING I NEVER GODDAMNED UNDERSTOOD. SHITTY? CLITTY?" -
"Gosh it disturbs me to see you, Gastown
Looking so down in the dumps
Every town here'd love to be you, Gastown
Even when taking your lumps
There's no town around as admired as you
You're ev'ryone's favorite town
Ev'ryone's awed and inspired by you
And it's not very hard to see whyyyyyyyyyy..." -
(+1, Beauty and the Beast. -CV)
"When I visited Vancouver BC for the winter olympics, the best thing wasn't olympic-related: it was that they have a hot dog cart vendor called Mr. TubeSteak and that I was the only one in my family to find it funny." -
"Gastown comes from a man nicknamed Gassy Jack, a bar/saloon owner. Gastown is still the name of an area in downtown Vancouver. Granville was named after the earl Granville. Vancouver was a Captain exploring in the late 1700s. Vancouver is not to be confused as the capital of the province, which is Victoria on nearby Vancouver island. I swear I am not cheating; I was a tour guide and this is the sort of thing I still remember. What was the question again? I can keep going. Fun fact: Captain Vancouver is covered in gold on top of the provincial legislature (in Victoria). It's not actually his body but we told children that anyways because it's more fun. Also, his statue has two left feet. I doubt the actual Vancouver did, though. Vancouver was English but his name was originally Dutch." -
(Captain Vancouver: still better than Captain Planet, and covered in gold to boot! -CV)
Correct Answer: Vancouver

"Partical Man" -
"Imhotep" -
"Caveman Grog. (Why do caveman names always have lots of 'G's? Why is there never 'Caveman Aethelred'?)" -
"Captainnnn Caaaaavemaaaan" -
(That would seem to be the logical answer, wouldn't it? -CV)
"Captain Platypus" -
"The Underminer--he may be beneath you, but nothing is beneath him!" -
(+1, The Incredibles. -CV)
"As spiders are inherently evil, I'm gonna say it's the spider who later bit Peter Parker." -
"I thought radioactivity was supposed to kill you, not grant you immortality. Or at least that's what I learned from watching Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan." -
"Ok, what DC comics villain didn't get his powers from a radioactive something? For that matter, what DC comics hero didn't get his powers from something radioactive?" -
"Wow, an immortal DC villain...that narrows it down to just Vandal Savage...and Ra's al Ghul, Black Adam, Resurrection Man, Immortal Man, General Immortus, the Shade, Felix Faust..." -

("Pas de movements? LE FUUUUUUUUCK!" -CV)
"Zis is Ze Ripoff, no? Jewelers." -
"De Beers, but I like Tree better" -
(Things go better with de beers. -CV)
"It's probably one of those stores where I can only gaze longingly through the window as my wallet weeps." -

(We've put Europop on this quiz; it's only a matter of time before Country gets its show. Toby Keith, we're watching you. -CV)
"LJDQ set me free, you are guilty (guilty) of putting earworms in me. LJDQ can't you see, I stand abuuused, by Love In The Third Degree." -
"Be careful, Ric Ocasek! Love in the third degree carries a sentence of 15 to life." -
"What's REALLY scary is that David Lee Roth became a paramedic. I hope he never had to deal with a suicidal patient. '...might as well JUMP!'" -
Correct Answer: Van Halen, "Dance the Night Away"
5. What 19th century American shipping and rail magnate bore the nickname "Commodore"?
(People who read "Commode" instead of "Commodore": 13. -CV)
"wait... Didn't they sing or something? I have frozen feet so my brain isn't working." -

Anyway, thanks again for playing, and we hope you enjoyed, and we of course hope to see you again real soon! New quiz up... uh, maybe today! Yeah! Timeliness! It's not just for clocks anymore! Or clock spiders. Or clockwork.
This quiz is not sponsored by Van Helsing, Casper Van Dien, or Gus Van Sant. If this quiz had been four questions, it would have been a minivan. Final Fantasy's Vaan gets an A for extraa effort.
Rock on!

That's when you need to put yourself to the test
And show us the passage of time.
We're gonna need a montage.
An LJDQ-training montage!
And just show a lot of things happenin' at once.
Remind everyone of what's goin' on.
And with every shot, show a little improvement
To show it won't take too long.
That's called a montage.
Even Rocky had a montage!
In any quiz, if you want to go
From just a beginner to a pro
You'll need a montage.
A simple little montage
Always fade out into a montage...
If you fade out it seems like a long time has passed in a montage...
And another thing...

Date: 2011-10-25 04:10 pm (UTC)OOOOH! I GOT QUOTED BY ANOTHER PLAYER! OH YEAH I AM COOL!I don't even remember calling trains and planes "kitty"--my mom kept a detailed journal of my early childhood, and she had made a note of how excited I was whenever I saw a train or plane and how I called them kitties. I don't know what I called cats though, she didn't write down what I called them (we had three cats back then, and they took turns keeping an eye on me while I slept, so it wasn't like I didn't know they existed).
I thought the 6n was deliberately left in (I sometimes don't correct typos of my own because they amuse me, so I figured that was the case when I posted my answers).

BTW, I don't think he's too angry about it since he based the character's accident in Kingdom Hospital on his own. I really want a pet Antibus.

Date: 2011-10-26 05:30 am (UTC)King worked the entire incident into The Dark Tower. It was really surreal and also sad. He also discussed it in On Writing, which is a really excellent audiobook. I recommend it even if you have no interest in writing yourself.

Date: 2011-10-28 10:44 am (UTC)I haven't got around to the dark tower series yet (SOON, VERY SOON!), however, I think that Insomnia referenced Roland quite a bit. I am quite behind on my Stephen King reading (stupid literature course makes me read horrible novels like Wuthering Heights and Madame Bovary *gag*. I am quite looking forward to next year, I have a unit on supernatural fiction. I hope Stephen King is a topic!).
I also love Dean Koontz, he was actually my first love in horror/ supernatural fiction, but I have such a literary crush on SK now, I am obsessed with anything and everything by him or based on his work.

Date: 2011-10-28 11:29 am (UTC)The Dark Half was the first paperback I bought myself back in high school. I fell in literary love with King. I actually still have quite a few of his novels on my shelf right now. :)
Good luck with that SN fiction course.
