What they really are is several sheets of used recycled paper pounded together, wrapped around the excretia of the alien fruit monsters, which has been left out in the sun to dry out a bit (leading to an appropriately jelly-like texture), and covered with the drool of six-year-old children, collected twice a year after Halloween and Easter.
There's a bit in Goats (a webcomic) about how kittens = pop tarts (http://www.goats.com/archive/980301.html).
